How did you come to write this book?

The short answer is: I was homesick for Atlanta and so I started writing about it. The long answer is: One of my teachers in graduate school encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and stop writing about overly talky, intellectual people who lived in San Francisco. So I wrote a story about Missy Meadows, the evangelical child of a housekeeper who ached for her long disappeared father. In the first story I wrote about Missy, she stole a clay bird from her mother's employer, Louise Parker. By writing that story, I got a little glimpse into Louise and her world. I wanted to know more about her...so I kept on writing in order to find out. And Bound South was born.
