When Jack Reilly, head of the NYPD Major Case Squad, takes a trip on police business to California, Regan decides to accompany her husband in hopes of fitting in some time together. While Jack is working, however, Regan runs into an old acquaintance. Zelda recently had quite a windfall; an elderly neighbor she befriended died and left her eight million dollars. And with Jack stuck in meetings, Regan is delighted when Zelda invites her to a big party at a Hollywood mansion.

There’s trouble brewing, though. Many of the guests seem jealous of Zelda, and she confides to Regan her uneasiness that her father’s brand-new wife may be in it for the money. When Zelda falls ill, Regan fears that it’s something more sinister than food poisoning, especially when she finds a huge butcher knife hidden near her own car. Are scammers the only danger, or could a killer be on the loose?
