Star Trek: Vanguard #3: Reap the Whirlwind

The mystery of the Taurus Reach is about to be revealed.

Ancient secrets lie on the fourth planet of the Jinoteur system, and three great rivals are fighting to control it. The Federation and the Klingon Empire want to wield its power; the Tholian Assembly wants to bury it.

But the threat stirring on that distant world is more dangerous than they realize. The Shedai, who ruled the Taurus Reach aeons ago, have risen from their ages of deathlike slumber -- to gather, marshal their strength, and take their revenge.

To keep Jinoteur from falling into enemy hands, the crews of Starbase Vanguard and the U.S.S. Sagittarius must risk everything: friends...loved ones...their own lives. But the sacrifices they make may prove too terrible for them to bear.

Q. how did you come to write Star Trek: Vanguard #3: Reap the Whirlwind?

A. Let me tell you a few things about Reap the Whirlwind.

As of the time of its publication, it was the longest single work I'd written. The first-draft manuscript totaled approximately 129,000 words (more than 560 pages in standard format) — and, much to my surprise, I wrote it in only 81 days.

There are numerous homages buried in the pages of this book. Nods subtle (and some not so subtle) to the members of the production staff at the Battlestar Galactica TV series; to obscure lyrical references on old Rush albums (the Caress of Steel LP, in case you're wondering); and to my past works for Star Trek.

Readers who have been following the Star Trek Vanguard series (which I co-developed with editor Marco Palmieri) since its debut volume, Harbinger, might have noticed an escalating level of action and mayhem. Part of the reason for this (aside from it simply being fun) is that, because my friends Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore wrote book two, Summon the Thunder, as well as a prequel eBook, Distant Early Warning (another Rush reference, for those of you keeping score), there is a degree of one-upmanship at work here. Considering the level of destruction I wrought in this book, I'll be very curious to see what their next move is when they tackle book four.

Lastly, a customer-service note for those of you who are just now buying the book: in the back is a minipedia that contains all the characters, places, and things that are original to the Star Trek Vanguard saga, in case you forget who someone is. But use it with caution on your first read-through: it contains spoilers for Reap the Whirlwind itself. I bear part of the blame for that. I wrote it initially as a writers' reference, not expecting it to be shared with the public. When my editor decided to incorporate it into the back of the novel, I hastily tried to pare it down into something fit for publication. Alas, I appear to have been only partly successful in that regard.

I can only hope that all of this insider info has made this seem like a more enticing purchase.

Thanks for reading!
