Nick Adams é o nome dado por Hemingway a uma personagem fictícia, mas em larga medida autobiográfica, sobre a qual escreveu bastantes narrativas. Tal como o próprio Hemingway, Nick é filho de um médico («Acampamento Índio» e «O Médico e a Mulher do Médico»), adora pescar e caçar na península situada no Norte do Michigan (“O Grande Rio de Dois Corações”), faz a corte a uma jovem chamada Marjorie, empregada num campo de férias (“O Fim de Qualquer Coisa”; “Vento de Três Dias”), participa na Primeira Guerra Mundial, como condutor de uma ambulância da Cruz Vermelha, e sofre uma ferida no joelho («Noutro País»). Os Contos reunidos no presente volume constituem, no seu conjunto, uma das obras inesquecíveis de Ernest Hemingway, e um dos grandes momentos da literatura norte-americana do século XX.

Earl Theisen, 1953

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
