Tip 72: Judge Where A Tornado Is Heading

If you’re on the ground, staring at a tornado, you can usually tell whether it’s moving to your left or right. But if a tornado looks like it’s standing still, you’re right in its path—and you need to get out, quick! Tornadoes often move from southwest to northeast, so you can use a compass or a car’s navigation system to avoid driving in the same direction. Of course, nothing beats the eyeball test. If you see a tornado, drive at a right angle to its path. Don’t try driving directly away from the twister—that’ll put you exactly in the line of danger. There’s an excellent chance that the tornado will overtake you, because twisters are difficult—sometimes impossible—to outrun.
